Poker Chips
There are three main types of poker chip (or casino chip)
stocked by GamingChips.co.uk - plastic, pearl and clay. Only the very
best chips have been selected in each category.
Clay Chips
American-style clay chips (wheel checks) are actually made from tough
acrylic material with a clay or metal insert to add weight. It is
the weight that you should consider when choosing a clay chip; realistic
casino chips should weigh more than 10gm so you end up with a 'chunky',
rather than 'plasticy' feel to the chip when you drop them from hand
to hand. The clay chips on GamingChips.co.uk are 11.5gm and definitely
feel like the real thing. Beware of lighter imitations as many outlets
stock only 8gm chips.
You then need to choose between two-colour chips and single colour
chips. The two-colour are more expensive to make, but look much more
interesting. GamingChips.co.uk stock suit-rimmed two-colour chips,
which means each chip has a series of small playing card suit symbol
around the edge. The single colour chips have a diamond shape indented
into the surface.
Pearl Chips
Produced by Dal Negro of Italy they are made from the finest methacrylite
with vibrant and irridescent colours. No wonder these chips are used
in the top French, Italian and Monaco casinos (where they are known
as 'fiche'). Once you have held these chips you won't want to put
them down, let alone hand them over to opposing players!
The chips are available in bags of individual values (5s, 10s, 50s,
100s, etc.) or in pre-assembled sets for starters, intermediates and
'professional' players, which represent excellent value.
You will also discover several boxed sets, which make ideal gifts,
consisting of assorted chips and cards in walnut or briarwood boxes.
The Portofino is GamingChips.co.uk's most popular product.
Beware: some sites describe their silk-printed plastic chips as 'pearlised'.
Obviously plastic chips are nowhere near the quality of these mother-of-pearl
chips
Plastic Chips
If Clay and Pearl chips are beyond your budget, but you are tired
of playing with match-sticks or bottle tops, you may want to check
out the low-cost plastic chips. For just over £10 you can start
playing with 200 plain, coloured chips. Alternatively, there are packs
with printed values.
